Good Points
-Strong teachers that adapt to your learning style
-Professionalism
-Pretty surroundings
-Good prices
-Schedule flexibility
-Interactive, various activities

I really couldn't have asked for better. I spent 2 weeks in San Marcos and took classes for 3 hours everyday. I got paired with a very effective teacher. She was very professional: always prepared and attentive. She quickly assessed my level of Spanish and built on it slowly. She adapted to my learning curve and made me work enough that I made considerable progress. The school is also quite pretty as each get their own little class space outside.

Good Points
San Marcos Spanish School is set in a gorgeous and tranquil garden which is meticulously care for by an expert gardener. The staff of the school is wonderful and knowledgeable. The teachers are all excellent. Classes are one-on-one, so the student's level and learning style will guide the design of the curriculum and teaching style. All of the teachers are adaptable and have the freedom to adjust classes to the student's needs and wishes. I was planning on only taking three weeks of classes, but my teacher (Andrés) was so great that I decided to continue for seven weeks. Some of my favorite points of discussion were coffee cultivation, the blending of ancient Mayan traditions with modern religions, legends of Lake Atitlan, the literature of Gabriel García Márquez, marketing in a region with budding tourism, and the complexities of privately owned transportation. (This was my second visit to San Marcos Spanish School. During my first visit, my teacher was Evelyn, who was also fantastic.) I was particularly impressed by the training that each teacher undertakes. I have the impression that San Marcos Spanish School (along with its sister, San Pedro Spanish School) has a more rigorous and thorough training process than other schools in the area. Professional development for the teachers is a priority, and it is obvious that the teachers and staff genuinely enjoy working WITH the director to develop the school. There are always genuine smiles, all around. It really is a wonderful environment. Bartolo, thanks for always having hot coffee ready in the mornings! You are a blessing!
Bad Points
Wear bug repellant. Classes are outdoors under (beautiful) cabanas, so mosquitos might stop by for a visit.

Good Points
Young and motivated, enthusiastic teachers. The school provides a lot of teacher training and they are constantly mixing games and activities in with our lessons.

There is a lot of focus on natural conversation and each Friday all the students came together for a group activity which was really helpful in building our speaking confidence.

The lessons take place in the school's beautiful and tranquil garden under well kept palapas. It is a great place to study and learn!
Bad Points
I personally could use a bit more instruction in English, but I understand immersion is a great way to learn. I could always ask for clarification in English as well, so this point is mostly on me.. I tried really hard not to ask for help in English, but I probably would have learned some of the concepts quicker.

Good Points
We loved everything about our time in the school! The teachers are all incredibly professional and well-prepared. We took lessons five hours per day and we felt that the whole time we were being challenged, but they kept things interesting and changing so we never got over-whelmed. They have options for all skill levels and desires and the first thing our teacher did with us was to ask us about our goals and current skill levels. She stuck to this very well, while also adapting to our trouble areas. Thank you to the whole staff, but especially our wonderful teacher Evelyn! We have already signed up for more than our initial two weeks of classes and can't wait to keep progressing our skills!

I absolutely loved my week of Spanish study in San Marcos. My teacher was Andres, and he did an awesome job of getting me excited about the lessons he had planned. We worked together to identify gaps in my knowledge and spent a week sharing interesting ideas about politics and social/environmental issues--all while developing my Spanish further! For the first time in my life, I feel like I have a much deeper understanding of how to use different tenses appropriately. I also appreciate that our lessons allowed me to discuss more complex issues outside of the usual necessities (food, directions, characteristics, etc.). I would highly recommend this school to anyone at any level. Communication was excellent from the moment I reached out via email to inquire about the school all the way through parting. This is an experience I think everyone could benefit from.
