The San Marcos Spanish School is an awesome place to learn Spanish and the location on Lake Atitilan is a perfect place to spend a week or five... :)

Beautiful scenery and wonderful weather. Even during the rainy season.

Good Points
Young and motivated, enthusiastic teachers. The school provides a lot of teacher training and they are constantly mixing games and activities in with our lessons.

There is a lot of focus on natural conversation and each Friday all the students came together for a group activity which was really helpful in building our speaking confidence.

The lessons take place in the school's beautiful and tranquil garden under well kept palapas. It is a great place to study and learn!
Bad Points
I personally could use a bit more instruction in English, but I understand immersion is a great way to learn. I could always ask for clarification in English as well, so this point is mostly on me.. I tried really hard not to ask for help in English, but I probably would have learned some of the concepts quicker.

Good Points
We loved everything about our time in the school! The teachers are all incredibly professional and well-prepared. We took lessons five hours per day and we felt that the whole time we were being challenged, but they kept things interesting and changing so we never got over-whelmed. They have options for all skill levels and desires and the first thing our teacher did with us was to ask us about our goals and current skill levels. She stuck to this very well, while also adapting to our trouble areas. Thank you to the whole staff, but especially our wonderful teacher Evelyn! We have already signed up for more than our initial two weeks of classes and can't wait to keep progressing our skills!

I absolutely loved my week of Spanish study in San Marcos. My teacher was Andres, and he did an awesome job of getting me excited about the lessons he had planned. We worked together to identify gaps in my knowledge and spent a week sharing interesting ideas about politics and social/environmental issues--all while developing my Spanish further! For the first time in my life, I feel like I have a much deeper understanding of how to use different tenses appropriately. I also appreciate that our lessons allowed me to discuss more complex issues outside of the usual necessities (food, directions, characteristics, etc.). I would highly recommend this school to anyone at any level. Communication was excellent from the moment I reached out via email to inquire about the school all the way through parting. This is an experience I think everyone could benefit from.

Good Points
The school is a very lovely and relaxed place place with friendly staff and a beautiful garden in which to study. My teacher Andres was excellent and pushed me hard while providing lots of assitance and would take the time to explain things slowly. We had some very interesting conversations about lots of polictical topics which was much better than talking about your pets and holidays. Her also had some good games for practising talking which i liked a lot. I did one week of lessons doing three hours a day which was a good amount, more hours would be difficult I think. I came here at an intermediate level so not sure how the experience would be for a beginner, we did not talk in English at all which was perfect for me.
Bad Points
There are private tutors offering better rates around town in San Marcos if budget is low. I chose to come here beacuse the lovely garden made a nice break from hanging out at my hostel.

I didnt do any activtites
